Team One Credit Union and Michigan Credit Union Foundation (MCUF) are proud to announce a combined $20,000 grant awarded to area students to attend training towards skilled trades certification. In a partnership with Greater Michigan Construction Academy (GMCA), students in Genesee and Tuscola counties will begin a two year program focused on providing the knowledge needed to prepare them for careers in the high demand field of skilled trades.

With this grant, GMCA will be able to provide its nationally certified pre-apprenticeship program approved by the Department of Labor to high school juniors and seniors interested in skilled trades jobs.

Students will receive training in electrical, heating/ventilation/air conditioning, welding, carpentry and plumbing.  STEM training, financial literacy and budgeting will also be key components of the training program. To help students take advantage of the high paying job opportunities in these fields, all students are put on a path to full apprenticeship, job placement assistance and employment.

Gerald Hutto, President/CEO of Team One Credit Union stated, “We are proud to partner with GMCA to assist in developing the career path for individuals in Genesee and Tuscola counties. Once trained in these high demand careers, students completing the program will be well suited to fill the thousands of current and future skilled trade construction jobs available in Michigan.”

“The Michigan Credit Union Foundation is pleased to assist Team One Credit Union in this initiative to make a long term difference in the financial futures of both students and businesses in Michigan with skilled trade training” said Carma Peters, MCUF President and CEO of Michigan Legacy Credit Union.

With funding and support from MCUF and Team One Credit Union, this community reinvestment initiative which includes fostering education initiatives, creating sustainable solutions and developing community partnerships will further their shared mission of building stronger Michigan communities now and in the future.

“We are excited that Team One leadership has recognized the synergy between Skilled Trades and education” says Jimmy E. Greene, CEO/President, Associated Builders & Contractors, Greater Michigan Chapter & The Greater Michigan Construction Academy. “This partnership means we aren't just building better skilled trades people but instead we are building better people to go into the skilled trades.”
